Can I type pinyin to search Chinese?
Yes. When Simplified or Traditional Chinese is one of your learning languages, the search popup generates tone variants for your pinyin input. Type da and the lookup tries da1, da2, da3, da4, and da5 against dictionary readings. You do not need a Chinese keyboard.
Prerequisites
Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese is selected in the popup → Dictionary → Learning languages. At least one Chinese dictionary is installed (e.g., CC-CEDICT).
Steps
Check learning languages
- Open the extension popup → Dictionary tab.
- Make sure Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese is selected.
Open search or page scan
- Press your search hotkey, or hold the page-scan modifier and hover text.
Type pinyin
- Type the word in pinyin (e.g., ni hao, da, zhongguo).
- YuzuLingo generates tone variants and matches against dictionary readings.
- Tone marks or numbers are optional—toneless input works.
