How do you look up a word without hovering over any text?
YuzuLingo · Nov 1, 2026
Press a keyboard shortcut to open a search popup at the cursor, then type the word you want to look up. The dictionary matches as you type, showing definitions, readings, pitch accent, and frequency—no hover or text selection required.
When hover lookup is not enough
Hover lookup needs selectable text under the pointer. That works for web pages and OCR overlays, but not when you hear a word in audio, read it in an image, or remember it from a conversation. A search popup lets you type the word directly.
Setting the hotkey
Open the extension popup, go to the Dictionary tab, and find Search popup. Click Set, then press the key combination you want. Common choices are Ctrl+Shift+F or Alt+S. The shortcut works anywhere the extension runs.
Romanized input
You do not need a native keyboard to search. Type romaji for Japanese, pinyin for Chinese, or Revised Romanization for Korean. The search converts to native script automatically and matches against your installed dictionaries.
Same card as hover lookup
The popup shows the same dictionary card used for hover lookup: glossary definitions, pitch graph, frequency rank, and speaker button. If you have Anki export configured, the export button appears on search results too.
Dismiss and reopen
Press Escape or click outside the popup to dismiss it. Press the hotkey again to reopen at the new cursor position. The previous query is cleared so you can start fresh.
